9 FAQs you didn’t know about the Student Benefits Health and Dental Plan

The Students’ Association, through Gallivan & Associates Student Networks, provides students with a comprehensive set of extended health and dental insurance benefits. Students taking nine credits or more at Mount Royal University are automatically enrolled in the Student Health and Dental Plans. Here are some other things you may not have known about your plan.

Did you know…

…Your family members can be added to your student benefits plan?

At the beginning of every Fall and Winter semester, you have one opportunity to purchase family coverage for your spouse and/or dependent(s). All you need to do is complete an application form through the SAMRU Student Benefits Plan Office and pay the family coverage fee. All family add-on forms and applicable fees must be received before October 6, 2017. Your family can only be covered while you are a student on the plan. If you drop to part-time status or lose your full-time status in any way, you will lose your family coverage.

Your optional family add-on is not automatically renewed. In order for your family coverage to continue, you must purchase the coverage each benefit year prior to the deadline. Family add-on fees are non-refundable.

2017 – 2018 Family Add-On Fees:

Health (one or more dependent) $115.00
Dental (one dependent) $200.00
Dental (two or more dependents) $400.00

…You have to activate your MRU plan before you claim any health or dental expenses?

In order to ensure your coverage is activated with SAMRU, you must submit a completed Personal Information Form to the SAMRU Student Benefits Plan Office, located in the basement floor of Wyckham Hour (Z001). Activation will take place 50 days from September 1, 2017.

If you are unsure about whether or not you are eligible for the Student Health and Dental plan, please contact the SAMRU Student Benefits Plan Office. There is no deadline for activating your plan.

…You can opt out of your Student Benefits plan?

The Fall semester opt-out deadline is October 6th, 2017 and the Winter semester opt-out deadline is February 2nd, 2018. If you would like to opt-out, you must have alternative coverage. You may opt-out at our office or you can also opt-out online by going to mystudentplan.ca/mtroyal. The online opt-out form has an auditing process, which will allow you to show your proof of coverage at a later date.

As long as you stay full-time, you will automatically be opted-out every year.

…You can create a benefits account online and your claims will be deposited directly to your bank account?

Online claim submission is available for a variety of covered services such as prescription drugs, dental care, vision care, and paramedical services. To take advantage of e-claims, students must register at groupnet.greatwestlife.com. You will need to set up your direct deposit for claim payments and provide your plan number and student ID number.

…Your benefits plan has vision coverage?

Your benefits plan covers 100% of vision expenses, up to a maximum of $40 for eye exams and $100 for eye glasses or contacts every 24 months.

…Your benefits plan covers paramedical expenses?

Massage therapy, physiotherapy, and chiropractors are all covered under your Student Health and Dental plan!

…You can access your plan across Canada?

On holiday? Back home for the summer? No problem. You have access to your Health and Dental Plan across Canada. Prescriptions, dentists, and/or practitioners are available to you anywhere in Canada.

…Your plan has travel coverage?

Your plan covers 100% up to a maximum of $2,000,000 per lifetime of medical expenses incurred as a result of a medical emergency arising while you are travelling outside Canada for vacation, business, or education purposes. To qualify for benefits, you must be covered by the government health plan in your home province.

…Your plan covers you through the Spring and Summer?

Students who attend school full-time in the Winter semester are covered with the Student Health and Dental Plan through to August 31.
