Wild Card Wednesdays

Wednesdays are wild at the Hub! Every month we’ll rotate through different activities, and they’ll always be a blast and cheap or free for students. Activities usually start at 7:00pm and go until closing time. Watch this page to find out what’s coming up.

February 28: Name That Tune!

Music geeks, unite! Get a team of buds together for this fun, free, all-ages game. If you really know your stuff, your team could win some amazing prizes!

March 7: Beer 101 & Tasting Event

Learn about your favorite beers from local breweries like Wildrose, Big Rock, Brewsters and more – and sample them as well! Representatives from each brewery will speak about their product for 5-10 minutes, followed by sampling. Plus, there are some fantastic door prizes to be won!

This event is $10 for students and $15 for non-students. However, students can purchase up to two tickets, so you can bring a non-student friend at the student rate. Tickets will be available soon through Showpass. There are only 90 spots available for this event. This event is 18+. Please drink responsibly; don’t drink and drive.

March 14: Karaoke Night

We’ll provide the music—you just bring your A-game! You’ll be able to sing your heart out the second Wednesday of every month at this free, all-ages event.

March 21: Gender Bender

Get pumped for the winter edition of Gender Bender! This beloved event is a celebration of gender expression and identity through live performance art. It’s a fun, inclusive evening of drag kings, queens and burlesque performers, all in a sex- and body-positive environment. The theme of the evening will be “Comicon-fused,” so comic/superhero-themed cosplay is strongly encouraged!

Tickets will be available shortly through Showpass. All ages. Free for MRU students, $5 for non-students. More details to come.

March 28: Super Smash Brothers Tournament

Join us and the Super Smash Brothers University club for a free, all-ages Super Smash Bros tournament! BYO controller (Wii U or Gamecube) to enter. The winner receives a cash prize!

Not the competitive type? You can still watch and cheer on your friends without registering to play, and there’ll also be a just-for-fun tournament for the casuals among us.

7:00 PM –  tournament check in

April 4: SAMRU’s Got Talent

For the final Wild Card Wednesday of the year on April 4, we’re teaming up with several student clubs to bring you SAMRU’s Got Talent, a contest showcasing some of the stars-in-the-making here at MRU! Student and alumni acts will have five minutes each on the Hub stage to wow a panel of judges, who will score each performance. At the end of the evening, votes will be tallied and prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, along with the audience favourite. Come cheer on your friends and see the talent of MRU students and grads on display – poetry, singing, magicking, banding, and more!

In order to put on an awesome show, we’ll need awesome student talent. If you’re interested in performing, email k.rebillaco@samru.ca by March 23 with your name, type of act, and whether you’re a current or former MRU student.
