History

The Students’ Association has had a pub on campus since Mount Royal moved to the Lincoln Park location in 1972. The Hub–which opened in 2011–is SAMRU’s first full-service bar and restaurant.

The Hub is owned and operated by the Students’ Association of Mount Royal University on behalf of our student members. As the place ‘where the campus connects,’ The Hub provides a fun and friendly atmosphere where members of the campus community can enjoy great food and good conversation.

Evolution of The Hub

1972 – The Students’ Association’s first bar, The Rathskellar, opened in 1972 before the construction of a dedicated student centre. Located near MRU’s Main Street, the bar was only open for four hours a day.

1987 – In 1987, SAMRU celebrated the opening of the Wyckham House Student Centre, a building owned and operated by MRU students. The student pub–renamed Thirsty’s–reopened in the new building.

1999 – Following a significant renovation in 1999, the student bar reopened as The Liberty Lounge. With a reputation for quality live music, “The Lib” was nominated for Venue of the Year at the 2004 and 2007 Western Canada Music Awards.

May 31, 2007 – By 2007, Wyckham House required renovation to accommodate MRU’s growing student population. SAMRU broke ground on a $14 million expansion to increase student space and services within the building.

Sept 2009 – The new Wyckham House officially opened in September, 2009, featuring 45% more space. With Phase I complete, Students’ Council turned its attention to the student pub. Phase II of the expansion would include renovations to The Liberty Lounge, the main floor washrooms, the basement and the link.

Apr 15 2011 – In Spring 2011, The Liberty Lounge closed its doors, soon to be reopened as the expanded student pub. The expansion would focus on new washrooms, a more accessible dance floor, vibrant decor and a full-service kitchen,

May 2011 – In an online Name the Pub contest, students submitted and ranked dozens of names. Based on their feedback, Council and staff picked ‘The Hub’ as the winner to reflect the new lounge’s community atmosphere.

Sept 13, 2011 – After months of construction and years of hard work, The Hub opened its doors, welcoming students to their new campus hangout. The dynamic new space received positive reviews from our membership.

Oct 24, 2011 – The Hub kitchen launched in October, offering a diverse array of meals and snacks. Focusing on quality food and affordable prices, SAMRU’s kitchen works hard to satisfy student appetites. The Hub gained a following during the 2011 fall semester, hitting 1,000 likes on Facebook by the 2012 Winter term.

Present – The Hub has grown and evolved with MRU over five decades. As the hotspot on campus for student-focused programming and great food and drink at student-friendly prices, we’re continuing to make friends today.
