Executive Committee

What is the Executive Committee?

Simply put, the Executive Committee is your voice and, under Students’ Council, they govern and guide the Association. Executives are elected by their peers, who are members of the Students’ Association of Mount Royal University (SAMRU).

A more detailed explanation: The Students’ Association exists for the purpose of ensuring that Mount Royal University students have an opportunity to participate in all matters that may affect the quality of student life at the University. The responsibilities associated with this mandate are immense. The SA ensures that all student are well represented on approximately 75 academic and non-academic committees and boards on and off campus. In addition, the Students’ Association provides students with avenues for personal growth and development outside the classroom. The SA also operates roughly 15 businesses and offers dozens of services designed to help student get through each day.

The responsibility for governing the Students’ Association rests ultimately with Students’ Council. The four elected students who form the SAMRU’s Executive Committee, act in accordance with the wishes of Students’ Council and oversee the day-to-day governance aspects of the organizations. They are:

  • President
  • External Vice President
  • Academic Vice President, and
  • Student Life Vice President

The Executive Committee deals with issues like tuition and loan policies, governance, student advocacy and lobbying, academic appeals, and external relations.

Each Executive member is an elected, full-time paid employee of the Students’ Association and must take one course per semester (excluding Spring and Summer), maintain a grade point average of at least 2.0, and keep full-time office hours.

The Students’ Association Executives are elected by and from the Active members of the Students’ Association to carry out the governance and executive functions of MRU’s student government. Working directly under the Executive Committee is the SA staff. The Staff helps perform the day-to-day operations and activities of the organization. The Executives are members of Students’ Council, which is the ultimate governing body of the SA.

The Executive Committee sits on over 75 Commitees to represent MRU students.
