Kate Larg

2008-2009 Conservatory and Continuing Education Representative

This is Kate’s second year on council as the Conservatory Representative. She has always been passionate about the arts. Before attending Mount Royal University, she was involved in the Calgary theatre community. Her position on council allows her to stay connected with the friends she made during that time, as well as affording her the opportunity to foster new relationships. Kate is currently completing her Broadcasting Diploma which, along with work, keeps her very busy! In her spare time, Kate enjoys being with her boyfriend, family and friends.

Tommy Lieu

2008-2009 Science and Technology Representative

Tommy is this year’s representative for the faculty of Science and Technology with the Students’ Association. Tommy is in his first year, working toward a Bachelor of Science degree here at Mount Royal University. In his free time, he enjoys playing badminton, web page designing and volunteering for various groups. Tommy wants to let everyone in Science and Technology know that he is here for them. He hopes to get to know the students he represents so he can understand the issues some of them may be facing. Tommy knows this will be an exciting year for him as a board member on SAMRU.

Troy McLeod

2008-2009 Aboriginal Students’ Representative

Troy is currently a first year full-time student in the Policy Studies Undergraduate program. He is committed to the concerns of aboriginal (and all) students of MRU. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary. Troy is the owner and broker for a real estate company and a mortgage brokerage. Outside his studies and work he enjoys music, playing guitar, practicing Tae Kwon Do, and riding his motorcycle. He would like to learn French and Michif, mountain biking, rock climbing and dance.

Eddy Argota

2008-2009 Immigrant, International and Visible Minority Students’ Representative

Born in Bacolod, Philippines, Eddy is in his second semester at Mount Royal in open studies. He’s hoping to enter the Bachelor of Arts University Transfer Program majoring in International Relations. Eddy brings a wealth of experience in governance and leadership to Students’ Council, having served as a Students’ Council president and as a delegate for their Model UN. He is excited about working on awareness issues, promotion of diversity and addressing the unique needs of Mount Royal’s immigrant, international and visible minority students.

Eily Sweeney

2008-2009 Students with Disabilities Representative

Eily, raised in Cochrane, is a second year open studies student at MRU. This is her first time on Students’ Council, and she is excited to bring her passion for the environment, recruiting student involvement, and learning about the governance process to her position. Besides Students’ Council, Eily is the current Sustainable MRC Club President, and sits on the MRC Sustainability Committee. Outside of classes, Eily is a Spanish tutor, works at the MRC Disabilities Services, and has started her own venture called Ride the Wave. This summer was the first ever completion of the 2,000 kilometre cycling tour from Calgary to Victoria to highlight local environmental action, and empower participants to take action in their own local communities. She believes anything is possible with faith, vision, and the courage to carry it through.

Jolene Ford

2008-2009 Women Students’ Representative

Jolene has been a part of the Mount Royal University Community since 2003, and began her studies in the A.E.P. When Mount Royal announced their undergraduate programs, she was extremely happy to be able to stay on campus to continue her studies. Jolene stays busy with a number of on and off campus activities. These include volunteering and part-time work in addition to her full-time studies in the Bachelor of Arts program, majoring in Policy Studies. Jolene hopes to gain some of the procedural knowledge which will allow her to influence the policies that affect the people with whom she works (youth) and volunteers (homeless and students).

Scott Finney

2008-2009 Commissioner to the President

Scott Finney is a History major, and has been a student here at MRU for the past 7 years. Born and raised in Calgary, Scott is a former national level competitive figure skater who hopes to someday become a high school social studies teacher. Besides history, he thoroughly enjoys studying political science, sociology and psychology. In his spare time, he reads, plays chess and basketball, and enjoys walks in Nose Hill Park and along 17th Avenue. Scott first got involved in the Students’ Association in 2004 and has been actively participating ever since. He encourages everyone to get involved with SAMRC, as he’s found it to be a highly rewarding experience.

Derek Hendricks

2008-2009 Commissioner to the VP Academic

Derek is taking policy studies as his major at Mount Royal University, and this is his first year. So far, Derek has really enjoyed his time at Mount Royal. He has already learned a tremendous amount and is proud to be a part of the college’s Students’ Association. Derek decided to become a Commissioner to the Vice-President Academic because he was inexplicably drawn to the vice-president’s line of work in relation to college conduct; and he wanted to do his part for the SAMRU, and in turn, contribute to Mount Royal’s dynamic community.

Cheri Konsmo

2008-2009 Commissioner to VP External

Cheri is new to Mount Royal and SAMRU, but is certainly not new to the realm of student advocacy. Before coming to MRU to pursue a BA in Policy Studies she attended Red Deer College for two years where she was a student councillor and also had the privilege of being the Internal Vice President. During the past summer she worked as the Research and Communications Assistant for the student lobby groups ACTISEC and CAUS. Her concern for students and the future of post-secondary education in Alberta has driven her to get involved with Students’ Council as the Commissioner to the Vice-President External. This year she is interested in increasing the effectiveness of SAMRU`s external relations and in using unique communication techniques to convey student interests to all levels of the government, public and stakeholders.
