March updates from your VP Academic: #MRUstudentrights, MRU’s Academic Plan, cannabis on campus and more

Categories: Representation

The Representation Executive Council (REC) is hard at work representing your interests to Mount Royal, all three levels of government, and beyond – but lots of that work happens outside of the public eye. We’re publishing monthly guest posts by your VP Academic, Cordelia Snowdon, to keep you informed and to give you a peek at what your student reps are working on behind the scenes.

#MRUstudentrights Event

On February 28th and March 1st, your Vice-President Student Life, Madelaine McCracken, and I hosted the second #MRUstudentrights event to talk to students about their rights and to ask for feedback on what can be improved. With the March 16th Withdrawal Date approaching, we talked to students about deciding whether or not to drop a class and our advocacy goal of moving the Withdrawal Date to the end of the semester.

If you missed the event and have questions about your rights as MRU students, please contact us!

Academic Plan Implementation

The Charter for the Academic Plan Implementation Committee was approved on February 15th, and we successfully advocated for having two students on that committee. The committee will be responsible for overseeing the execution of the 2017-2022 Academic Plan, which includes creating a framework for personalized learning, increasing programs available at MRU, supporting indigenization at MRU, and strengthening undergraduate research.

MRU Open Education Week Celebration

March 5th to 9th is Open Education Week, so if you are passionate about Open Educational Resources, or just want to learn more, check out one of the events happening on campus or online! You can sign up to attend the March 9th MRU celebration here, or check out to find online webinars.

Cannabis Panel – Save-the-Date

With the fast-approaching approval of cannabis legislation, your student Representation Executive Council is working on a Cannabis Panel to give students a chance to learn and ask questions about the upcoming changes. The event will be on March 28th, tentatively from 1:30pm-3:00pm in Wyckham House. Stay tuned for more information on panelists and how to submit your questions for the panel!
