Meet Margo! Your Clubs Coordinator

Many of you in clubs will likely already know this delightful lady. We thought we’d take the opportunity to let you get to know her, if you haven’t already, and provide you with a friendly face from the SAMRU family. Whether you have questions about an existing club or would like information on how to start your own, Margo is your gal!

How long have you been the Clubs Coordinator with SAMRU?

I’ve been here about 4 months– one semester!

How do you like it so far?

I’m really enjoying it! The students and staff are great to work with.

What’s your favourite part of being the Clubs Coordinator?

I was involved with the clubs program as a student and it is nice to have the chance to give back and help others have that same great experience I had.

Where did you go to school?

I went to Mount Royal. I graduated last Spring with a Sociology major and a minor in Elementary Education.

Were you part of any clubs in school?

Yes, I co-founded and was the President of the Visual Arts Club of Mount Royal University (VACOMR). We did group tutorials (painting, drawing, mixed media projects), held paint nights in the Hub, and put on an art show on Main Street.

Clubs were the best part of my university experience and I highly recommend getting involved with them either as a member or an executive.

What upcoming projects/events are you really excited about with SAMRU clubs?

We started our monthly Snack and Chat event last semester so I’m really excited about that continuing this semester! The event is open to all students and takes place on the first Wednesday of every month in the Clubhouse (Z306) from 1-2 pm. It is a great chance for people from different clubs to get to know each other and build community (and there is usually free food)!

What’s happening this month with clubs?

The Clubs & Campus Expo is coming up on January 9th and 10th on Main Street. This is a chance for students to see what clubs are on campus. This semester there will be some new clubs, as well as many existing clubs. So far we have about 45 clubs registered to attend. If you don’t find a club that interests you, you can always start one!

What are your short term goals? Long term?

A long term goal of mind is to go back to school and get a Master’s Degree in Art Education.

My short term goal is to keep getting to know the clubs program and continually improve it by getting feedback from students.

What do you do in your spare time?

I am a visual artist so I spend a lot of time in my studio. I like to sculpt and paint, mainly abstract sculptures and abstract or landscape painting.

Harry Potter books or movies?

Books for sure. I have read them so many times that my copies are largely held together with duct tape (and magic of course)! The movies don’t do the books justice and are almost blasphemy.

What’s your ideal Saturday night?

Netflix and large amounts of chocolate. Always binging the Office on repeat (US version).

What has been your biggest success up until now?

Graduating university and getting a job I love!

What does your perfect day look like?

Sleeping in, hanging out, watching Netflix, and baking.

Head to Z306 in Wyckham House (3rd floor) to meet Margo for yourself and find out more about our clubs program here at SAMRU.
