History

The Students’ Association has had a pub on campus since Mount Royal moved to the Lincoln Park location in 1972. The name of the first student pub The Rathskeller was located where Tim Horton’s is now, and was only open for four hours a day. When Wyckham House first opened in in 1987, the pub moved into the student centre and was renamed Thirsty’s. After a significant renovation in 1999, it opened up as the Liberty Lounge. The Liberty Lounge gained a reputation throughout Calgary for its quality live entertainment, and was even nominated for “Venue of the Year” at the Western Canada Music Awards.

Over the summer of 2011, the space went through further renovations, and opened as The Hub in September 2011. The new pub includes a full kitchen along with washrooms, expanding the student-focused business from a pub, to a fully-licensed restaurant.
Changing the name of the campus pub was hotly debated, and finally after a successful “Name the Pub” contest, SAMRU staff and elected student council members decided that the new focus of the restaurant and pub dictated a new name and approach. The space is new, the staff is new, and the menu is new – so The Hub is new too!

The Hub is the place on campus to meet and socialize, and will continue to provide high-quality service for great value to our student members.

The Hub is owned and operated by the Students’ Association of Mount Royal University on behalf of our student members.
