September has arrived, and whatever approach you’re using to achieve academic success, starting off your school year with a conversation about academic accommodations is highly recommended. MRU has three Access Advisors in Accessibility Services (Y 201) including Bonnie Blankert, who recommends students who may need accommodations strive to start the conversation as early as possible.

What is an ‘academic accommodation’ exactly? It is an action (or actions) taken to assist individuals who are permanently or temporarily disadvantaged in order to reduce barriers they may face. For instance, someone may be allowed extra time to take exams if they can show need. Services offered at MRU also include screening of learning concerns, adaptive technology, disability-related coaching, and much more.

The Accessibility Services web page defines accommodation as being “based on appropriate and relevant documentation of disability”. Depending on your situation, you may need documentation from a clinical Social Worker, Psychologist, Ophthalmologist, or another professional who assists you with your specific and unique needs. You may need academic accommodations for physical or mental disabilities, or you may benefit from accommodations if you face a temporary challenge such as an illness, accident, or injury.
