Between exams and deadlines, shorter days and colder nights, and financial stresses looming on the horizon, November can be a stressful month for students.

“It’s when a lot of work is culminating,” says Representation Executive Council (REC) Vice President Student Life Valerie Caden-Baptiste. “It’s nice to have fun things to look forward to.”

That’s why the Student Life Committee is declaring this month No Stress November and hosting stress-reducing activities every week at locations around campus. Each week will feature a different activity designed to help students take a break from the pressures of school; they’ll range from colouring to shredding paper to writing stressors on a communal punching bag, so there’ll be something to suit everyone’s tastes.

Valerie is especially excited for the Lego Walk, which will be set up on Main Street on November 22 and at West Gate on November 24. “We’re going to set up Lego on the ground and you can conquer your fear by walking across. There’ll be markers saying ‘Group Projects,’ ‘Midterms,’ ‘Presentations’ and ‘Final Projects,’ and at the end it’ll say ‘Complete!’”

No Stress November will culminate in the Nearly There Party in Wyckham House on November 30, which will feature music provided by DJ joeoui, free swag, and a reprise of all the stress-busting activities from the past month.

For her part, Valerie manages stress by drinking lots of coffee, petting cats, and going to the Hub (where the Representation Executive Council has been known to hold meetings). She’s also taken up rock climbing once a week.
