I don’t know about you, but February is when we at SAMRU start to go a little stir-crazy with cabin fever. That, plus the current cold snap and recent dump of snow, has us craving some time out of doors. “But SAMRU,” you wail, “there’s a bajillion centimetres of snow out there and the ground underneath it is hard as a dorm room mattress!” That may be true, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start planning ahead for the greener, warmer, more patio-friendly future. Here’s some upcoming programming that promises to get you thinking outside thoughts during this indoor weather.

Solar energy solutions for the win!

If there’s one thing that can be said for Calgary winters, it’s that we get no shortage of sunshine. In fact, in a cruel twist of fate, our coldest days also tend to be our sunniest. Wouldn’t it take the edge off the brutality of February if we knew all that sunshine was at least going to good use? Well, maybe not, but we can pretend. On February 15, we’re holding “Create: Renewable Energy Solutions,” a panel discussion in Wyckham House about renewable energy sources, with a focus on solar power. Come eat your lunch with us and hear from a panel of experts on the future of renewable energy; we can’t promise it’ll make you any warmer, but it might make the future seem just a little brighter.

Get ready for spring with garden workshops

Trust us: it’s never too early to start thinking about your garden. The SAMRU community garden (hey, did you know SAMRU has a community garden? Find out more about it here!) is hosting a series of workshops this semester to help you get your horticultural game so right in time for the spring.

If you’re a garden foodie, “Best Edibles for Calgary” will give you the scoop on the best plants for this region, companion planting, succession planting, garden mapping and more. Whether you’re planning your own garden or interested in helping out in the community garden, it promises to be informative and mouth-watering. If you’re sweet on honey or just an insect enthusiast, make sure to check out the “Bee Workshop,” a collaboration between SAMRU and the Student Science and Technology Society. “Calgary Garden Soil” will teach you how to improve your soil’s structure and texture for a healthy, nutrient-rich garden.

We’ll be seedling you soon!

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that digging around in the dirt is good for what ails you. You might’ve seen folks from the SAMRU community garden on Main Street recently with soil, seeds, planters and gardening tools. If you missed your chance to plant and take home your very own marigold seedling, never fear – they’ll be back on Main Street on March 28 for round two! You’d be surprised how satisfying it can be to get some earth under your nails when the snow is heaped high outside…and if you’re patient, you’ll have a little plant buddy to keep you company through the rest of the winter months.
