Most people know the Hub as somewhere to relax after an exam or a place to kill a couple hours before your next class. It’s a hub for students all over campus, but it’s also the hub of some pretty great staff.

Meet Chanel!

One such staff member is Chanel. She’s been serving at the Hub for nearly a year and has no plans of quitting anytime soon. “Everyone is very relaxed and the customers and staff are easy-going,” she continues, adding, “management treats us well and everyone likes to work as a team.” The Montreal born-and-raised server has been in Alberta only a few short years, having moved to Calgary in September of 2013. Even though she hasn’t been in Calgary long, she’s been visiting the Hub for years. “I’ve attended Gender Bender every year since 2014,” she points out with pride. She’s also attended several iterations of Karaoke Wednesdays and Sex Toy Bingo, some of her new favourite events.

Chanel became a student at Mount Royal in 2016 and is in her first year of Massage Therapy. Presented with many different choices of institutions, Chanel chose Mount Royal so she could get a proper university experience. “Even in the Diploma and Continuing Ed. programs, you get a sense of community you just can’t find outside a university campus.”

“DeVery Bess” Drag King Around

Chanel isn’t only known around the Mount Royal campus; She’s a local legend at Twisted Element in Calgary for her drag king performances as DeVery Bess. She is also part of the Fake Moustache Troupe which performs monthly at Dickens Pub in order to raise money for local LGBTQ+ charities. Her goal is to “travel the world, performing and massaging people”, and Chanel is well on her way to achieving her dream!

Though her skills are vast, from dancing and juggling to eating fire and fire spinning, her biggest success was performing solo for both the Calgary and Edmonton International Burlesque Festivals in 2016. She received much praise for both those performances but Chanel still hopes to perform for a much larger crowd. “I want to be a headliner, preferably for the Austin International Drag Festival or another burlesque festival.” Chanel isn’t camera shy either and hopes to appear on RuPaul’s Drag Race!

The Hub is More Than a Campus Pub

Even with a very busy social life outside of school, Chanel enjoys her time working at the Hub. “It’s fun to see the regulars come in, the people who come every day after class or work. People are for the most part very kind and respectful.” Now that the Hub is open throughout the summer, you won’t have to go far for a great food and drink selection, at a great price. “You have to try the BBQ Chicken Burger. It’s my favourite thing on the menu,” she encourages. She also recommends keeping an eye out for special events happening at the Hub. “The events are always a lot of fun. You can even book the Hub for your own event!”

Come down to the Hub this summer to meet Chanel and the other great staff working at your campus pub! The Hub is now open throughout the summer, Monday to Friday from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm* with new (and super cheap) specials every day. Hope to see you there!

*July 24, 2017 EDIT: Hub hours for the remainder of the summer will be Monday to Thursday, 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Friday, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Thanks!
