Do you know someone who’s responsible, creative, driven, and hungry for some real-world experience to grease that resume? Is that someone you? Well get ready, because Governor elections are coming up, and it’s an opportunity you won’t want to miss out on! Visit samru.ca/elections to learn more and to nominate someone!
The Student Governing Board is a policy-making Board of Directors. Governors are elected or appointed from and by SAMRU members (i.e., you) to help oversee and guide the mission, vision, and belief of our organization.
A Governor seat is a minimal time commitment—10-15 hours per month over 12 months—but it has a major impact: you’d be helping to govern a multi-million dollar organization and shape your Students’ Association. If you’ve been wondering how you can make a real difference during your time at Mount Royal, this is your chance.
You have from Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 8:30 am until Monday, October 3, 2016 at 4:30 pm to throw a hat in the ring. All candidates are expected to attend the (aptly-named) all-candidates meeting on Thursday, October 6, 2016 from noon until 1:00 pm, or to let the Chief Returning Officer know via email if a proxy will be attending in your place. There will be a mock Governor meeting held on Monday, October 17, 2016 from 4:30 pm until 6:00 pm.
Still need more convincing? READ ON, DEAR INTERNET STRANGER.
Be part of a team
Sitting on the Student Governing Board, you’ll be surrounded by passionate, ambitious students like you who will challenge you, persuade you, support you and push you to be your best, smartest self. Together, you’ll be guiding the mission, vision, and belief of our organization and looking at the big picture.
Get valuable experience
SAMRU is a multi-million dollar organization that requires a huge combined effort to run. Sitting on the Board will give you detailed insight into board governance—a complex yet integral and powerful form of leadership.
Governors receive honoraria for their participation in work groups (not for board or committee work), but the real reward is the skills you’ll emerge with, which will set you apart in whatever field you plan to go into.
Afraid you don’t have enough experience for the job? No problem! We’ll provide you with all the training you need to succeed in the role. If you’re a currently a Mount Royal University credit student, and enrolled in at least one credit course for the Fall and Winter semesters, you meet all the requirements to run for Governor.
As part of the Student Governing Board, you won’t just be overseeing a multi-million dollar organization; you’ll have the power to start your own board initiatives. Tons of change-makers within SAMRU and Mount Royal have held seats on the Student Governing Board, which sharpened their skills and set them on a course for future leadership opportunities. Even if you don’t feel like a leader now, a Board position would teach you how to get things done within big organizations, and that’s a pretty empowering feeling.
