The Representation Executive Council (REC) is already hard at work representing your interests to Mount Royal, all three levels of government, and beyond – but lots of that work happens outside of the public eye. We’ll be publishing monthly newsletters from Cordelia Snowdon, the VP Academic, to keep you informed and to give you a peek at what your student reps are working on behind the scenes.

Welcome Back MRU Students!

It is exciting to have the halls filled with students again! Although the classrooms were empty, the rest of the SAMRU REC team and I were hard at work over the summer in preparation for the start of Fall Semester.

As part of my campaign promise, it is my goal to provide monthly updates to keep the MRU community in the know.  My monthly updates will cover important updates and highlight any changes that will impact students. Now that classes are back in session, there will be new policies, program and course changes, and other academic updates coming forward.

Fee Deadline

This summer, we heard from concerned students about the short notice of the ACTION REQUIRED email for the August fee deadline, and we are working to have the reminder sent out earlier. The fact that there was only a week between the reminder and the deadline caused extra stress for some students, and we will be making sure to provide communications to students earlier in the future.

Open Educational Resources: AKA Free Textbooks!

I have spent the summer searching for ways to increase student access to free textbooks and other resources. In addition to bringing back #TextbookBroke, we will have a student advocacy campaign and an open educational resource (OER) event early in the Winter Semester. Keep an eye out for initiatives to increase access to OERs and ways that you can support the cause.

Academic Plan Implementation

On May 18, 2017, the MRU General Faculties Council approved the 2017-2022 Academic Plan. The plan will determine the academic experience of MRU students for the next five years, and regular updates will be provided as the plan is implemented.
