Training requirements by volunteer role

We’ve created a visual to give you a more concrete idea of what different roles might be doing. You can access it here. Read up on the different training requirements for each volunteer role below:

CASUAL SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS: Required to attend New Volunteer Orientation (1.25 hours), & Working Across Difference (2 hours)

EVENT & OUTREACH VOLUNTEERSRequired to attend New Volunteer Orientation (1.25 hours), Working Across Difference (2 hours), Basic Conflict Management (1.25 hours), and Events & Outreach Training (1 hour)

PEER SUPPORT & QUEER PEER SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS: Required to attend New Volunteer Orientation (1.25 hours), Working Across Difference (2 hours), Peer Support Listening to Refer Training (only for general Peer Support Volunteers (6 hours), Queer Peer Support Listening to Refer training (only for people who intend to volunteer with the Pride Centre) -(6 hours),  AND ONE ADDITIONAL TRAINING DAY (6 hours) which covers the following topics: Supporting Students with Disclosures of Domestic Violence, Basic Conflict Management, NEW: Fresh Chat Introduction (for live chat peer support), and NEW: ‘Keep an Eye on it’ Training: for suicidal warning signs triggering a referral.

PLANNING & IMPLEMENTATION COMMITTEE (PIC) VOLUNTEERS: Required to attend New Volunteer Orientation (1.25 hours), Working Across Difference (2 hours), Basic Conflict Management (1.25 hours), and additional training as directed by PIC Leader

MONEY TALKS PIC VOLUNTEERS: Required to attend New Volunteer Orientation (1.25 hours), Working Across Difference (2 hours) , Basic Conflict Management (1.25 hours), and Peer Support Listening to Refer (6 hours)

TAX CLINIC VOLUNTEERS: Required to attend New Volunteer Orientation (1.25 hours), Working Across Difference (2 hours), & Tax Clinic Training session (3 hours)

GOVERNANCE & REPRESENTATION COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERING: Separate training processes exist for each of these roles. Please contact volunteer@samru.ca for further details.

NOTE: Less than 8 registrants creates a situation where we won’t have enough diversity to run the session, which may result in a workshop cancellation.

September 11: 1- 3 pm (Sign up deadline: September 9)

September 14: 1 pm-3 pm (Sign up Deadline: September 12)

September 23: 2 pm – 4 pm (Sign up Deadline: September 21)

September 29: 9 am – 11 am (Sign up Deadline: September 27)

October 5: 5 pm – 7 pm (Sign up Deadline: October 3)

No additional sessions offered until JANUARY 2021

Event & Outreach Training:

October 3: 10:30 am – 11:30 am

October 17: 10:30 am – 11:30 am

Peer Support Listening to Refer: 

October 4, 2020: 10 am – 4 pm

Queer Peer Support Listening to Refer:

October 18, 2020: 10 am – 4 pm

Peer Support Centre Orientation:

*PLEASE NOTE:

Although normally most sessions are held in The Gallery on the second floor of Wyckham House (Z 224), except for Working Across Difference sessions which are normally held in Council Chambers (Z 236), all Fall 2020 training sessions will be held virtually on either Zoom or Google Meet. Training sessions are normally offered both in January and September, with some exceptions due to low enrollment or cancellations. Training sessions with 5 registrations and under may be cancelled or rebooked. See Volunteer Impact for details.
